Musings of a timekeeper

07

Thank you for all your comments on the 2009 race, we appreciate them.

While we do our best to produce a 100% accurate result this is not always possible. Some of the difficulties we encounter are:

  • Missing race number
  • Boat entered in the wrong class
  • Competitor not wearing a bib
  • Race number on the wrong side of the boat
  • Race number upside down!
  • Lots of boats finishing at the same time; sometimes we can miss one!
  • Boats paddling back upstream and subsequently crossing the line a second time!
  • Human error on our part

In each case reported to us we will endeavour to locate and correct any error. This year, 2009, we have three competitors reporting that they are not on the result. One was simply missed while keying the times. The other two numbers do not appear on either of the time sheets. In both of these cases an estimated time was given. With this we can search the finish line video and hopefully include the two missing boats in the final result.

In one class this year we did not enter a split time. The outcome of this was that, although the result was correct, the times were showing a couple of minutes longer. This was explained to the competitor who brought it to our attention. It was also explained that the result published at that time was provisional and that the corrected times would be posted on this site.

Hello , What do you think of the winner boat gp masterclass, is it in the right catagory or is it a whitewaterracer? is probably not faster than wavehopper anyway. Edward

Edward,

It is my position to produce a result. I cannot comment on the eligibility of boats in different classes.

Any concerns relating to the eligibility of boats should be addresses to the office of the Irish Canoe Union. You will find their contact details at www.canoe.ie

In fact I never saw the boat in question.

Hi, this is just a question and not a complaint

Do you have any plans to include a masters class in womens. Currently we either have to race with the healthy fit young ones or go up against the men.

As the sport is growing and the increase in ladies participating in the sport is also promising, I believe it would beneficial to have a masters ladies class, akin to what the men. I think it would encourage greater interest amongst those of us on the wrong side of 40 to take part in this great event.

Would like your views on this

Catriona

"It is my position to produce a result. I cannot comment on the eligibility of boats in different classes."

Thats not what I saw on this site earlier when you decided to make a public posting regarding a particular class. Not very professional for an "independent" race timer.

Mr Ward, Try reading the race rules before posting in future.

C1 Paddler,

Yes you did see something on this site earlier and you are correct I should not have done so. For this I apologise.

Mary,

Vanity? Will they all admit their ages ;)

Seriously though, I will pass your comment to the ICU office.

Declan, ALL Belfast CANOE Club competitors were listed in the race result as Belfast KAYAK Club, they told me they filled the forms with correct club name. .....
You are too young to know those older and oldies who have competed for many, many years are members of Belfast CANOE Club .......
Any query ask John Ringwood, Jim Morrisey, Michael Scanlon, Peter Spence etc, etc....

FAO Catriona, sorry your are not old enough for separate class, I am at least 20 years older than you.. true, true.. and have to put up with competing with young girls like you for years

Navarat,

I have amended the results for 2010. However, the club was also referred to as "Kayak" in 2002, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 !
