IN FAIRNESS - 'two eager idiots' without a boat SHOULD NOT be taking part in any canoe race never mind Liffey Descent. Have you not considered the possibility that you would be a very serious threat to other participants?
My recommendation would be to:
1. Take lessons from a recognised/registered instructor
2. Get his/her signature on the official entry form which is a declaration that you are competent to take part in the race.
3. Purchase your own Canadian and enter the race next year.
